We were out of play dough. Play dough is kind of important around here. I needed some items to finish up the girls' Roman shades for their bedroom. I had my coffee, so I thought, "This is doable. Let's have a more exciting day than normal and go to Hobby Lobby."
First off we couldn't find Shirty so we couldn't get out the door. 20 minutes later we have shoes on, Shirty to the nose (Claire likes to smell it), a poopy diaper changed, and my Hobby Lobby list. We get there quickly, head into the store and are greeted with the kind smiles of those who think my children are precious (and they usually are). We head to get my shade items, screw eyes, dowel rods, thread, velcro...it's kind of a lot to find while Claire and Kate play a game of taking turns lying down and dragging each other across the floor. Well, at least they weren't disrupting anyone, and having fun while I do some math in my head real quick to see how many yards of velcro I need to cover 90" of fabric. I know, it's easy math, but these kids make my brain stop working sometimes.
I finally got all my things and informed the girls that it was time to head to the play dough aisle, wherever that is. Wondering around is not wise. It makes the munchkins antsy. We wondered into an aisle of fun projects, $4.99 each. "Why not?" I think. $4.99 will save the day if the day needs saving, so I encouraged Claire to choose from a certain stash. This stash didn't make her happy enough. She chose from another, more expensive stash. I said "no." She cried and threw a little fit. I couldn't buy a special project for such a fit as that one, so I said, "I'm sorry Claire. We're just getting play dough today." She cried LOUD. We left the aisle. We found the play dough. The crying and begging was still happening and then Kate started to cry and beg.
Then Kate ran away. I lunged to grab her shirt, but she was inches out of my grasp, laughed, and turned the corner and ran some more. I was now two aisles away from my cart full of Lola and things. One huge lunge and I caught the giggling little girl. I don't usually do this, but I spanked her in the store. I just can't have 2-year-olds running away and turning corners and running some more and thinking it's a fun game. I gathered them all back at the cart, crying and begging. Needless to say, I was sweating. Holding Kate, pushing the cart, and dragging a clining, crying Claire we start to head to the front to make our purchase and Claire panicks and cries and begs louder. In her flurry of grabbing me and the cart to try to keep us from leaving without her special thing, she tripped and fell and scatched herself good on a glass shelf separater. She let out a scream that you could hear from the 4 corners of the hobby store.
We traveled like this with wailing and tears, and even a little blood, from the back of the store to the front. Thankfully, the whole time Lola was an angel, probably just being entertained by the show.
We made it home safely and I promptly turned on Dora.

My blood pressure went up just reading that! You poor, sweaty thing - did you buy the stuff for your curtains or just leave?
Oh Amanda! I feel sick just thinking about that experience...I have a play dough recipe if you ever want to just stay home:)
Oh my. Oh my. I'm feeling so bad for you. I'm glad Dora was there to help save the day.
I wish I could have been there to help!
Wow. I sometimes wonder how I went twenty-something years of life and never appreciated how nice it was to walk into a store shop with my full adult brain focussed on one simple task. Motherhood is a full contact sport.
Way to go, wrangling and loving those four precious little ones. Treasures in heaven, my friend. And on earth as well. :-)
That made me tired just reading it. What did mom's do before there were movies to turn on after a crazy outing like that?
That makes me want to cry. Good for you in persevering in the store though. Hopefully your next visit will be better after that experience.
your title is perfect for this story. that's about all i can say after reading. hope today was better!
