So, I want to clear up any confusion on how many people the calzone recipe actually feeds. I always make the 2 lb. recipe from my bread machine cook book. Bobby Flay's linked recipe is also a 2 lb. recipe. If I split that dough 8 ways, that makes 8 calzones. I roll them out to about 1/4 to 1/8" thickness, which makes them about 8" in diameter (I'm totally guessing, actually).
Nathan eats 1 1/2 calzones. I eat one. The girls usually eat a half. Claire tried to eat a whole one but couldn't finish it. I'd say you could serve 8 adults if you provided a big caesar salad or another veggie along with it. But usually, I bet a manly man would like 1 1/2 or 2.
I used a double sized jar of marinara sauce for dipping and had just a little left over.
Another tidbit: make sure you kind of squeeze the juice out of those artichoke hearts before you chop them. I just smooshed their little heads into a paper towel, which probably eliminated a 1/4 cup of liquid that would have made my dough a little soggy.
I'm going to have to make them again soon. The girls despaired that there weren't enough leftovers for the next evening.
Let me know how your work out!
