Conversations with Claire

When I was pregnant with Riley we had dinner with some of Nathan's work friends and their wives. I remember one of the ladies didn't have anything to say at all until she started talking about her daughter and then she barely took a breath and we could hardly shift the conversation away. Her life was her daughter. I kind of feel that way when I blog and I think I should apologize for my limited content. Oh well. Some day I'll blog about my two-hour workouts and what I'm painting and all the shopping I did and how on top of my highlights I am. Hahaha, that will actually be a sad day I think. And now I'll share a story about one of my kids. :)

Well this morning Nathan rode his bike to work, so I took Riley to school with all the kids. Claire observed the lady who stands at the drop-off place to make sure all the kids make it inside the school. She asked about this lady's purpose and I explained how we just want to make sure each child makes it safely inside the school. Claire wondered at what could possibly happen to a child between the street and the school front door. So I nonchalantly said how, "oh you know, maybe someone who doesn't have kids and wishes they had a kid might want to take a kid." Claire wondered why they couldn't have a kid. She thought, that's not hard. All they have to do is get married. I said, "sometimes people can't find anyone to marry." She gasped at this and said, "Oooh" like it was the saddest party of the story. I explained that they can sometimes be tricky, offering the child a puppy or candy. Claire thought this was absurd. "Why doesn't the guy just ax nicely and say, (in her softest nice-guy voice) 'I don't have any kids. Do you want to be my kid?'"
No sooner had she solved that problem with just asking nicely, she asked. "Are pirates real?" "Well yes" I said, "actually, they are real." She couldn't believe it. I explained that they are usually poor and this is how they have decided to go about getting money and food. Again, "Why don't they just ax nicely? (In her softest pirate voice) 'Can we have some food and money please?'" "I don't know, Claire. That sounds like a great idea. They should probably try that."
And the next thing on her mind, "Are giants real?" I explained, "Yes, giants are real but they are usually really nice." Claire inquires, "Then why do they make us so scared?" I said, "well, they shouldn't make us scared. That makes the giants sad when we won't just be their friend. They want to be loved too." This broke her heart. Now she really wants to find a giant and be their friend.

I love your kid stories- I feel like you have tons of variety in your posts. With every story, I wish there was better language to agree with how cute your kids are. Like Claire. There aren't words for how cute her conversations are- I just don't know what to say ;) She is SO cute and sweet, and considerate of childless people, pirates, and giants.
