An April Fools Lesson

The girls are still figuring out what April Fools is and how to fool someone properly.

So, last night Riley and Claire offered me some lemon water that was half lemon, and they know I'm not fond of too much lemon.  They wrapped it in a towel so that I wouldn't see through the glass how obscenely cloudy it was with lemon, and then tried to shove it into my face, yelling "April Fools!"  Of course I saw it coming.  They were hiccuping with giggles, so eager to give me this drink.  I'm no fool.

We explained what a fooling joke would look like and how shoving lemon water in someone's face is not so much fooling as it is rude.

The next thing we know, they're in our bedroom laughing a lot.  They were messing up our bed sheets and hiding a fly swatter under the covers for us to find later.  Again, we had to give some April fool training.

Riley was still trying to pass gas on me, while Claire finally figured it out.

She came from Riley's room with lipstick all over her face saying, "Riley, I'm so sorry, but while I was putting on your lipstick, the stick just broke off."  Riley panicked and ran to find that she had been fooled.  And Claire would do a sing-song "April Foooools!"

Before Riley was even back from that Claire said, "Oh no, Mom, someone drew on the wall over here.  Lola got the window crayons."  She is good at this.  She kept a straight face and concerned eyes.  And then she sings a triumphant, "April Fooooools!"

Then "OWwwww, Dad, I just hurt myself on the bike!" fake crying.  And then sings, "April Foooools!"

It just kept going, and everyone was her victim.  She even tried to fool Lola, "Oh no, Lola!  Your stuffed animal is missing!"  Lola was so concerned and even though Claire sang her "April Fooooool's!" song, Lola didn't understand, and kept looking for her missing stuffed animal.  It was sad.

Nathan said, "Claire, you have to go to bed early."

Claire starts crying, "Whyyyyy?" Flopping in a chair,  "I'm sorry.  I'll stop it.  Can't I just stay up?"  When her crying was at it's height, Nathan sings "April Fooooools!"

It was beautiful.  The tears and the laughing mixed.
