I just need to say, as I've said before, Nathan makes my dreams come true. So far in life, he's only shut me down on crazy things like, pouring a sidewalk around the perimeter of our backyard (the kids could ride in circles forever), letting me repaint the kitchen walls a new color every year, or not letting me put skylights in every room (natural light is lovely, but leaks are not).
So, Nathan is wonderful and he gets excited about my ideas with me and works really hard to complete them. No, we haven't finished the ottomans, or the kitchen cabinets, or the front flower bed, but one evening after the kids were in bed I was looking through the Pottery Barn magazine and I said, "I love this wood thing!" It didn't appear to be for sale, but we have since discovered that it is the Garden Lattice. Of course, it's made out of mango wood and mahogany and costs $349.
Nathan said, "I can do that. Easy." He hopped on the computer and drew it up in one evening.
We're making ours out of pine, I think. It will cost us a quarter the price!
Here is theirs above the bed. Sorry you can't see the whole thing.
Here, Nathan is sanding all the lattice pieces.
Nathan drew up a picture on Solid Work. He took that file to Fab Lab http://www.fablabtulsa.com
What an awesome place. You can use all their tools and pretty much make anything you dream up.
You take in your wood and your drawing on your USB, put it into their machines, and it cuts it out for you.
You punch those pieces out like a little stencil.
Sand them up and you're ready for piecing it together.
That's our frame. It'll be 3'x3'
If you ever dream something up that you'd like to make out of wood, or if you draw a picture and want it burnt on leather, or your kid draws a picture and you want it carved into masonite with a laser, you can do it at Fab Lab.
It should be done soon, once I can settle on a stain color. I also want square head antique, teeny tiny nails to tack it all together, but I think Nathan's going to draw the line there.
